Spain, alternatively known as España/the Kingdom of Spain/Reino de España, is a sovereign country located in Southwest Europe on the Iberian Peninsula of which it occupies about 85%. The independent state shares its borders with Portugal and France. It has coastlines on the Mediterranean Sea, the Atlantic Ocean, and the Bay of Biscay (an inlet of the Atlantic Ocean). Spain’s total land area of 195,346 square miles includes the Canary Islands and the Balearic Islands, as well as Ceuta and Melilla, two small enclaves in North Africa. The capital, financial and arts center of the country is Madrid.
