Laos, officially known by the names Lao People’s Democratic Republic and Sathalanalat Paxathipatai Paxaxôn Lao, is an independent landlocked country located in the northeast-central mainland part of Southeast Asia. The capital of the sovereign state is Vientiane (Viangchan), situated on the Mekong River in the northern part of the country and is the largest city in the sovereign state. Laos shares borders with China, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, and Myanmar (Burma). The country is a frequently-visited and often-recommended tourist destination due to its rich history and culture as well as the beauty of its nature.
At a glance Laos would appear as an unsuitable location to study abroad due to its unfortunate history as a country which as a part of the Vietnam War and its current economic status. However, the country can serve as a stepping stone in obtaining an academic degree. While the country does have a relatively limited list of available and accredited universities, it does compensate by providing a rather extensive list of subjects that can be studied including Agriculture, Business, Education, Engineering, Philology, Economics, Mathematics, Tourism, Sociology, Political Science, Humanities, Psychology, Law & Jurisprudence, Medicine, Architecture, Physics, Management, Finance & Banking, Information Technologies and others. In addition, the sovereign state’s institutions of higher education provide in-depth training on the mentioned fields of study. Furthermore, the country’s institutions of higher education have relatively affordable tuition fees even though the range of the fees can vary greatly. The country is also a suitable location to become a part of volunteer programs, particularly in the fields of Community Development, Education and Business.
